No. 1 UT Tyler sweeps weekend softball series

The No. 1-ranked UT Tyler softball team ran their winning streak to 10 games by sweeping Lone Star Conference doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday at Irwin Field.

On Friday, the Patriots won over the Texas A&M International Dustdevils (8-0, 5-3). On Sunday, UT Tyler downed the Texas A&M- Kingsville Javelinas (2-0, 3-1).

The Patriots (25-2) continue to lead the LSC with an 18-2 record. UT Tyler now hits the road for five straight doubleheaders — March 21 vs. Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma; March 23 vs. Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City; March 28 vs. St. Mary’s in San Antonio; March 30 at St. Edward’s in Austin; and April 4 vs. Texas Woman’s in Denton.

The next home series for UT Tyler is April 6 vs. Texas Woman’s (1 and 3 p.m.).

SUNDAY



The UT Tyler pitching staff shut down the Javelinas, allowing just one run on four hits in the doubleheader sweep.

Kaylee Davis (5-0) hurled the final 6.1 innings, taking over in the first inning for Primrose Aholelei, who got the first two outs and also walked two. Davis allowed two hits with no walks and four strikeouts as the Patriots won 2-0.

On the offensive side, JT Smith had a double with singles from Ka’Lyn Watson, Taryn Barney and Abbie Behe. Watson had an RBI with runs scored by Smith and Watson.

AJ Jasso hit a double for the Javelinas and Laney Doelitsch had a single.

In the second game, Cera Blanchard (10-2) threw all seven innings, allowing two hits and one run with two walks and eight strikeouts in the 3-1 win.

Smith had a triple and Sam Schott hit a double and drove in a run. Bailey Krolczyk added a two-RBI single. Jasso had an RBI single and Shelbie Peal added a hit for A&M-Kingsville.

FRIDAY

Aholelei tossed a five-hit shutout and Smith and Jordyn De Los Santos hit homers as the Patriots took the 8-0 win in six-innings in Game 1.

Aholelei (12-0) struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Smith had a two-run homer in the first inning. She added a single and a sacrifice fly and three RBIs.

Other extra base hits by the Patriots were from Angelique Rangel (triple), Watson (double) and Alaunah Amarez (double).

Rangel led UT Tyler with three hits with two apiece from Smith and Watson. Sam Schott had a single.

Adding RBIs were Bailey Krolczyk, De Los Santos and Rangel.

Kristin Maldonado had two hits for the Dustdevils.

In the second game, the Patriots broke out to a 5-0 lead and held on for the 5-3 victory.

Schott hit a three-run homer to center field to lead UT Tyler. Smith had two hits with singles from Krolczyk, Watson and Del Los Santos. Smith and Watson had an RBI apiece.

Blanchard got the win in the circle, going 5.2 innings (3 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts). Davis got her third save of the season by going 1.1 innings (0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts).

Victoria Gonzalez had a single and three RBIs to pace Texas A&M International. Queenandra Dunn and Damaris Saldivar added singles.

The Dustdevils are 14-15 overall and 6-10 in the Lone Star Conference.
