Marshall compiled 573 yards on the ground on the way to a 55-28 win over Tyler Legacy on Friday night on Earl Campbell Field at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

Semaj Gatson led the way with 26 carries for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Isaiah Bush followed with 18 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Alton Henderson tacked on 10 carries for 98 yards and two scores. And on the final drive, Keyunta Lias toted the ball four times for 43 yards and found the end zone.

Marshall had 60 carries in the contest to just five pass attempts as Henderson was 4 of 5 through the air for 61 yards. The Mavericks finished with 634 total yards.

Tyler Legacy also had a big night offensively with 452 yards — 173 on the ground and 279 in the air — but Marshall got stops at opportune times, and the Mavericks scored on all eight of their drives in the game.

Legacy quarterback Zach Davis was 22 of 33 for 279 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Rodney Burnley had 16 carries for 84 yards, and Jace Love added 16 carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Micah Igaya had seven receptions for 48 yards. JP Rainer made five grabs for 65 yards. Za’Bryan Hood had five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Marshall got the ball first and needed just six plays in just more than two minutes to score on a 30-yard run by Gatson.

Legacy answered just more than a minute later on a 32-yard strike from Davis to Takaiden Brown to tie the score at 7.

Marshall then took more than seven minutes off the clock, going 16 plays and 70 yards, finishing with a 1-yard run by Henderson to go up 14-7. The Mavericks then held Legacy to a 40-yard field goal try that was no good and answered with a 3-yard touchdown run by Bush to stretch the lead to 21-7 with 9:00 left in the second quarter.

The Red Raiders followed with a 19-play drive that last exactly six minutes and ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Love to trim the score to 21-14. The Mavericks came back and got another 1-yard scoring run by Henderson in the final seconds to lead 28-14 at halftime.

Legacy wasted no time scoring to start the third quarter, needing just five plays to go 77 yards as Davis and Hood connected for a 53-yard scoring pass to cut the score to 28-21.

Marshall came right back with a 7-yard touchdown run from Gatson, making it 35-21 with 6:44 on the clock.

The Red Raiders struck back with a 1-yard touchdown run by Love, cutting it to 35-28 with 4:04 left in the third quarter. That was the final scoring play for the Red Raiders, and the Mavericks didn’t stop running or scoring.

A 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter by Bush made the score 42-28.

Early in the fourth quarter, Legacy got inside the Marshall 10-yard line, but Dameon Smith Jr. picked off a pass in the end zone.

The Mavericks then needed just six plays to go 97 yards as Gatson broke loose for a 66-yard run to put the score at 49-28.

Legacy had a 15-play drive that ended on an incomplete pass in Marshall territory, and the Mavericks responded with a 1-yard scoring run by Lias in the final minute.

Legacy (0-3) will play at Crowley on Sept. 20, and Marshall (2-1) will be at Palestine.
