John Tyler Lions bounce back with win over Jacksonville; Lady Lions fall to Maidens

In a District 16-5A basketball matchup on Tuesday, John Tyler and Jacksonville split the doubleheader at Boulter Middle School gym.
In the first game, the Jacksonville Maidens defeated the JT Lady Lions 58-36.

In Game 2, the JT Lions got going early en route to a 71-39 victory over the Jacksonville Indians.
BOYS
With Darry Moore in foul trouble just minutes into the game, Michael Hogg Jr. and Roy Lampton got the Lions going in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Hogg kept the magic going along with Deon Fields and Jerome Jones filling the hoop as well.
Hogg led the Lions (11-11, 3-3) with 24 points, while Deon Fields and Jerome Jones had 10 points apiece.
Roy Lampton led the Lions with seven rebounds, followed by Moore and Sean O’Neal with six boards each. Fields and Nathaniel Hall had five boards apiece.

Garry Minifee paced the Indians (5-18, 1-5) with 11 points, all in the fourth quarter.
“We needed this after a tough loss to Lufkin on Friday,” JT coach Cedeno Clark said. “It was a good team win. We just want to try to get better each day.”
Others scoring for JT were Hall (6), Moore (6), Lampton (5), O’Neal (4), Richard Powell (4) and Anthony Minor (2).
Others scoring for the Indians were Jonathan Denman (8), freshman Vito High (6), Keion Redd (5), Chris Carpenter (4), Desmond Fuller (3) and Sean Driskell (2).
The Lions wore orange socks to promote Students Against Violence.
The Lions are scheduled to play at Whitehouse on Friday with the varsity scheduled to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. at C.L. Nix Wildcat Arena on the Whitehouse HS campus. Jacksonville will meet Hallsville at John Alexander Gymnasium on the old Lon Morris College campus in Jacksonville. The game has a 7:30 p.m. scheduled start.
Longtime and legendary Jacksonville basketball coach John Alexander, father of Indians coach Mark Alexander, was in attendance.
JT won the JV game 43-19.
GIRLS
Grace Abercrombie bombed three long NBA 3-pointers in the first half to get Jacksonville going and the Maidens cruised to the win.
The sophomore finished with 21 points to pace Jacksonville. Alexia Calderon added 12 points. Kalessia Anderson led the Maidens with 12 rebounds while Tyshera Gipson added eight boards.
Asia Parker led the Lady Lions with 24 points, including 11 in the third quarter to try and pull JT closer. Kassity McKenzie had a near double-double for JT with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Others scoring for JT were Makia Moon (2) and Ellyse Daye (2). Moon also had eight rebounds as did Destanie Bowie.
Others scoring for the Maidens were Tamia Tucker (8), Kalessia Anderson (7), Keonshay Fuller (4), Gibson (4) and Jakayla Young (1).
JT falls to 11-14 on the season and 3-5 in district, while the Maidens improve to 23-5 and 7-1.
The Lady Lions return to play on Friday, traveling to Whitehouse to meet the Lady Cats. Tipoff is set for 6:15 p.m. at C.L. Nix Wildcat Arena. Jacksonville will play host to Hallsville at John Alexander Gymnasium on the old Lon Morris College campus in Jacksonville. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
