Defending champion Patriots start tournament with comfortable win

UT Tyler began defense of its ASC basketball crown with a resounding victory Thursday night.

The Patriots, the top seed, set a scoring record with a 113-53 victory over No. 8 seed Ozarks in the American Southwest Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament before about 500 fans at the Herrington Patriot Center.

It was also UT Tyler’s 20th straight victory.

Coach Kevin Baker’s Patriots (25-1) advance to the semifinals to play No. 4 seed Howard Payne, an 83-64 winner over No. 5 seed Hardin-Simmons.

The semifinal has a tipoff at 7:30 p.m. today.



The Eagles from Clarksville, Arkansas end their season at 12-14.

The first semifinal will match No. 3 Louisiana College, a 91-90 overtime winner over No. 6 Mary Hardin-Baylor, and No. 2 UT Dallas, a 59-47 winner over No. 7 Concordia-Texas. The LC vs. UTD contest is set to start at 5 p.m.

The semifinal winners will play for the ASC championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Patriots, who ranked No. 10 in the nation and No. 1 in the South region, also set a record with 19 made 3-pointers, smashing the previous record of 14 against Sul Ross State on Jan. 5.

The Patriots shot 57 percent, including 51 percent from long distance.

UT Tyler took a 57-20 halftime lead whe Brittany King tipped in the ball before the buzzer.

The Patriots led by as many as 62 points in the second half.

The Patriots had six players score in double-digits, led by Michelle Obach (17).

Jasmin Baskin finished the night with 15 points, all on 3-pointers, while Madison Wilson and King each had 12 points. D’Onna Matthews added 11, while Makeniz May contributed 10 points.

King had a double-double with her 12 rebounds.

Bryanna Moltz led Ozarks with 20 points, while Tyler Adams had 10.

PATRIOT POINTS: The previous record for points by the UT Tyler was 107 against Centenary on Nov. 5, 2014. … Senior Jasmin Baskin also made history in the game, hitting her 62nd 3-pointer of the season, breaking the previous record of 60 set my Melissa Thomas in 2007-08. … The Patriots are 2-0 against Howard Payne this season, winning 76-63 in Tyler on Jan. 3 and 73-44 on Feb. 7 in Brownwood.
