Lee tennis edges Harker Heights in area tourney opener

WACO —Taylor Robinson made sure Robert E. Lee tennis lived to fight another day in District 11/12-6A tournament. Robinson’s girls singles win gave Lee a 10-9 victory over Killeen Harker Heights in the quarterfinals Wednesday at Waco Regional Tennis Center.

In the girls No. 1 singles match, Robinson dropped her first set 6-1 to Vallejo from Harker Heights. She battled back to win the next set 6-2 and set up a third one to decide the match.

It would decide more than that because as Robinson and Vallejo were competing against one another, every other match completed with Harker Heights and Lee splitting the 18 contests, 9-9.

The winner of Robinson and Vallejo would move her team on in the tournament. Robinson made sure it was the Red Raiders, carrying over her momentum for the second set to hammer Vallejo 6-2 in the third set for the victory.

Lee advances to face top seeded Waco Midway in the semifinals. That team match is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. at Midway High School.



“We played well and are just looking forward to the (semifinals),” Lee coach Ronnie Blake said. “Midway is the No. 1 seed and beat Sachse 10-0, so we’ve got our work cut out for us (Thursday).”
