TJC tennis has big day at nationals

PLANO — Tyler Junior College rebounded to soar near the top of the NJCAA Men’s National Tennis Tournament standings with a 13-0 mark on Wednesday.
ASA of Brooklyn, New York, leads with 35 points, but the Apaches are right behind the Avengers with 33 points. TJC is seeking its second straight national championship.

Laredo and second-day leader Cowley (Kansas) are tied for third with 30 points. Abraham Baldwin (Georgia) is fifth at 27 points. TJC was tied for ninth with 15.5 points after Tuesday’s play.
TJC went 5-0 in singles championship play and 6-0 in doubles championship play, as the doubles squad played two matches. Also, Mate Cutura, who was upset on Tuesday, won two matches in the backdraw. Matches in the main draw are worth one point each, while the backdraw or consolation is worth a half-point.
Thus, the Apaches have five singles players and three doubles teams in the semifinals. Also, Cutura is in the semifinals of consolation.
Championship singles matches are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday with the consolation semifinals slated for 11 a.m. Doubles matches are on tap for 2:30 p.m. at the Collin College campus.
Taking wins for TJC in singles were: Flight 2, Vaughn Hunter over Erik Eldagsen Marques of Cowley, 6-1, 6-0; Flight 3, Tyler Lee graduate James Martell over Alex Brown of Seminole State (Oklahoma), 6-1, 6-1; Flight 4, Ryan Hudelson over Jacksonville College’s Daniel Apacible, 6-2, 6-2; Flight 5, Trey Seymour over Ryan Huss of Mesa (Arizona), 6-3, 6-1; and Flight 6, Dillon Eizember over Gavin Grivel of Laredo, 6-2, 6-3.
In consolation, Cutura won two matches — 8-0 over Angel Silva of Glendale (Arizona) and 8-2 over Dalton Woodfin of Temple College (Texas).
