Regional kickers honored on TSWA Class 1A All-State Football Team

It is all about special teams as three East Texans earned first-team honors, and all three teams overall featured a placekicker from the region, on the 63rd Annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A All-State Football Team. They were three of nine players chosen to either the first, second or third teams.

Carlisle junior kicker Angel Garza connected on 7 of 8 eight field goals, highlighted by a 42-yarder. Garza was also nearly perfect on PATs, going 30 for 33, and delivered 14 touchbacks on kickoffs.

Ty Ham and Justin Johnson led the way for Mount Enterprise’s special teams. Ham, a senior punter, averaged 41.2 yards on 25 points while placing five inside the 20-yard line. Johnston brought four kicks back for touchdowns, averaging an astounding 44.2 yards per return.

All three were chosen to the first team.

On the second team offense was Alto senior kicker Nicolas Leon and Yellowjackets senior offensive lineman Armondo Arroyo. Leon was responsible for eight field goals and also went 55 of 62 on PATs. Arroyo, a guard, registered 56 knockdowns as a road grader for Alto.



Also earning second-team recognition were running backs Chavis Gregory of Tenaha and Keshawn Jackson of Cayuga. Gregory, a senior, carried 158 times for 1,574 yards and 21 touchdowns while also notching six receiving scores for the Tigers. Jackson, a junior, rushed 198 times for 1,879 yards and scored 27 touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Tenaha senior defensive lineman Denzelle Williams was honored on the second-team defense after totaling 16 sacks, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

On the third team and keeping with the special teams theme is Overton senior kicker Michael Phillips after he was good on 20 for 20 PATs and 5 for 5 on field goals.

Receiving honorable mention honors were Alto quarterback Zac Sturns, Carlisle running back Bryce McGowan, defensive linemen Seth Garrett of Overton and Tyarius Hackett of Alto and linebacker Logan Smith of Alto.

Wellington running back Terry Gilbreath was named the Offensive Player of the Year. He rushed for 2,879 yards and 43 touchdowns on 213 carries for the Class 1A Division II champs. He finished with 53 touchdowns total.

Wellington linebacker Edgar Tellez won Defensive Player of the Year after he recorded 210 tackles with seven sacks and 10 forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and three interceptions.

Completing the tri-fecta, Wellington’s Wade Williams was chosen Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 14-0 record and state title.
