Filling in for injured senior Hale Buckley, All Saints freshman fullback Brice Borgeson couldn’t have envisioned a better start to his varsity football career.
The young fullback scored twice, including the go-ahead 19-yard touchdown with 3:14 to play to lift the Trojans to a thrilling 40-34 victory over Carrollton Christian Academy in the second game of the Tyler Football Classic at McCallum Stadium.
The Trojans moved to 1-0 for the second straight season and continued the Tyler dominance at the classic. T.K. Gorman goes for the second straight Tyler sweep today against Winona after Grace Community topped Winnsboro on Thursday.
All Saints capitalized on a gutsy move from first-year Carrollton Christian coach Robert Clyde, who opted to go for it on fourth-and-10 from his own 27. His senior quarterback, Garrett Jeffcoat, threw incomplete, setting up the Trojans’ winning drive with 4:42 to play.
After All Saints quarterback John Norton dashed for 27 yards, Borgeson took his fifth carry of the game up the middle for the game-winner.
Borgeson finished with 27 yards.
Norton, who passed for 199 yards all last year, completed 8 of 13 passes for 114 yards, including a 45-yard bomb to Chandler Hammond with 17 seconds left in the first half. The senior signal caller also rushed for two touchdowns and 97 yards, about half of the Trojans’ 201 total.
All Saints’ efforts on offense were just enough to overcome Jeffcoat, who ran his way to 138 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 115 yards through the air, with a 16-yard strike to Nicky Stuart.
The Saints had a chance to win the game after stuffing the Trojans’ attempted two-point run after going up 40-34. Carrollton Christian took over at its own 44 with 3:10 to play, but failed to convert a first down. Jeffcoat, unaware the fourth-down snap was on its way, whiffed the ball and Saints running back Cameron Dornan fell on it for an 18-yard loss, allowing the Trojans to run out the clock.
All Saints took a 7-0 lead on the first drive on a Norton score before Jeffcoat responded with a 59-yard touchdown run. The teams traded jabs throughout the game, with Carrollton Christian’s 28-14 lead late in the second quarter the largest margin.
Merritte Greene rushed for 79 yards and a score on nine carries for All Saints. Hammond led his team with four catches for 84 yards.
Coach’s son Konnor Atkins had two catches and a blocked punt early in the third quarter that helped build the Trojans’ momentum, leading to the come-back victory.
