UT Tyler, TJC hosting hoop games

Defense has played a key role in the UT Tyler women’s 14-game winning streak.

The UT Tyler Patriots and TJC Apaches are hosting basketball doubleheaders on their respective campuses on Saturday.

The Patriots are meeting Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference matchup. The women play at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m. Both games are scheduled for the Herrington Patriot Center.

A few miles to the northwest, the Apaches and Apache Ladies are slated to play Region XIV Conference games.

The Apache Ladies play Paris at 2 p.m., followed by the Apaches meeting Trinity Valley at 4 p.m. Both games are at Wagstaff Gymasium.

The Patriot women (16-3, 10-0) are fresh off a victory over No. 19 Texas A&M International on Thursday in Tyler.

UT Tyler won 65-47 for its 14th consecutive win and the Patriots’ 23rd straight home victory.

The Patriots outscored the Dustdevils, 36-18, in the second half to pull away.

Ella Bradley led UT Tyler with a double double, 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Others scoring for the Patriots were Montse Gutierrez (10), Meagan Mendazona (10), Frances King (7), Tina Machalova (6), Destini Whitehead (6), Brooklyn Palmer (4) and Gabby Elliott (4).

The Patriots hit on 14 of 20 free throws and 7 of 13 from 3-point (Bradley, 2; Gutierrez, 2; Mendazona, 2; Machalova, 1).

The Dustdevils were 10 of 11 at the free throw line and 7 of 28 from 3-point.

Raianna Brown led the Laredo school with 13 points.

Texas A&M-Kingsville enters the contest with a 7-10 overall record and 3-7 in conference.

The UT Tyler men are 2-13 overall and 1-8 in the LSC. The Patriots fell to A&M International, 72-52, on Thursday.

Bryce Roberts led the Pats with 13 points, while Alec Zambie added 12.

The Javelinas enter with an overall record of 3-12 and a conference mark of 1-9.

TJC

The TJC squads are fresh off big wins on the road.

The Apache Ladies (11-6, 2-1) upset No. 20 Blinn, 72-68, in Brenham on Wednesday.

Grace Ezebilo had a double double for the Apache Ladies, 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Others scoring for TJC were Fenisha Bertho (14), Kiana Bennett (13), Shalayne Morgan (10), Amyia Bowie (7), KeleChi Dike (6), Lillian Jackson (6) and Alexandria Jefferson (2).

Paris enters the contest with a 5-11 overall record and 1-1 in conference.

On the men’s side, the Apaches have won six straight games, including Wednesday’s 85-51 win at Victoria.

TJC is 13-4 overall and 5-2 in conference.

All nine Apaches scored against the Pirates, led by Dariyus Woodson’s 16 points.

Also in double figures were Hudson Anderson (12), Jonah Nesmith (11) and Jermontae Hill (11).

Others scoring were BJ Hooper Jr. (9), Sammon Johnson (9), JJ Louden (9), Brandon Walker (5) and Jacyn Jones-Taylor (5).

Trinity Valley enters the contest at 15-3 overall and 6-1 in league. The Cardinals suffered their first conference loss, a 70-68 decision on Wednesday against Lee College in Baytown.
