TYLER — Services for Charles Howard Spurgeon, 78, of Tyler, will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home with Rev. Reid Fade officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler. Visitation is scheduled one hour prior to service.
Mr. Spurgeon passed away Sunday, June 16, 2024, in Tyler. He was born May 12, 1946, in Tyler to Howard Charles Spurgeon and Marguerite Sweeney Spurgeon.
Charles was born and raised in Tyler. He graduated from Robert E. Lee in 1964. He married the love of his life, Maryhelen Howe, before leaving for Vietnam in 1970.
After returning he finished his degree at the University of Texas in Arlington in Architecture. He co-owned Spurgeon Toyota in Longview with his brothers from 1980 -1990. He then worked with Social Security Administration until retirement. He was a signature artist with the Southwestern Watercolor Society. He was a wonderful family man and an incredible example of a father.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Maryhelen Howe Spurgeon, and granddaughter, Virginia Elyse Spurgeon. He is survived by his loving family including his children, Debra Ann Martin of Tyler and Charles David Spurgeon and wife Virginia Kathryn of Forney; grandchildren, Dr. Marygayle Radley, Ross Martin, and Charles Rocke Spurgeon; great-grandchildren, Julia and Layla Radley; and brothers, Gene Spurgeon and wife Pam and Gary Spurgeon.
