Shirley Hopson, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died on July 17, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1936, Shirley lived a life defined by love, quiet strength, and deep devotion to her family. She was known for her gentle spirit, her warm heart, and the way she made everyone feel at home in her presence. Shirley touched the lives of all who knew her. She was a loving and devoted mother to her sons, Charles Hopson and the late Kenneth Hopson, and a proud grandmother to Tanya Hopson, Matt Hopson, Laura Swindle, Hannah Tate, and Elissa Vos. Her love extended across generations as a cherished great-grandmother to Clayton, Ellie, James, Luke, Claire, and Chloe — each of whom brought her tremendous joy and pride. To her family, she was simply “Ma” — a name that carried all the love, comfort, and strength she gave so freely throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Kenneth Hopson, and her husband, Charles Hopson Sr. Shirley’s legacy lives on in the values she instilled: kindness, perseverance, and the importance of family. Her memory will be treasured by all who had the honor of knowing her. A memorial will be held at a later date.
