TYLER — Jeannie Claire Gentry Huie, of Tyler, Texas, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the age of 79, leaving behind the legacy of beloved educator, caring friend, and faithful Christian.
Born May 4th, 1945, in San Antonio Texas, Jeannie then moved to Tyler, Texas and attended Bell Elementary, Hogg Middle School and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Speech from Baylor University and went on to obtain her Master of Arts in Reading from the University of Texas at Tyler. Jeannie taught for many for years in different capacities but retired from her most beloved position of 18 years as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at John Tyler High School in Tyler. Jeannie loved seeing her students learn to write and read English and enjoyed celebrating those that took the next step into college after graduation!
She had a self-proclaimed love of learning and reading that stayed with her throughout her life.
Additionally, in her retirement years Jeannie began using her gift for crocheting to make hundreds of children’s comfort blankets for Project Linus.
Jeannie was a lifelong member of Green Acres Baptist Church, where her parents were founding members. One of Jeannie’s most cherished memories was a trip to the Holy Land with her husband, mother, and Reverend Paul Powell.
Jeannie wrote in her testimony in her final years: “I continue to study and grow closer to God and ask him to use me however He wants.” She cited Jeremiah 15:16 and Psalm 86:11-12 which highlight having joy in the words of the Lord and a desire to be taught by Him.
Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby and Al C. Gentry. She is survived by her husband of 57 years James (Jim) Huie of Tyler, her daughter Janna McClure (and husband Jeff) of Tyler, her son Jonathan Huie (and wife Summer) of Richardson, and grandchildren Cash McClure, Blake McClure, and Elliot Huie.
Visitation for Jeannie will be held on Monday, March 10th, 2025, from 5:30 -7:00pm at Burks-Walker-Tippit Funeral Home located at 215 E. Front St., Tyler. A graveside service will be held at the Rose Lawn Cemetery Pavillion located at 2003 Blue Mountain Blvd. Tyler on Tuesday March 11th , 2025, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tyler ISD Foundation or any Green Acres Baptist Church Ministry in her honor. Claire Huie
