Two people were killed Wednesday night after a plane crashed in Smith County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The plane crashed at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday near Burleson Lake and north of Live Oak Drive, said Sgt. Adam Adam Albritton with Texas DPS.

The Cozy single-engine plane crashed near Mineola on private property, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

The names of the two victims had not been released at publish time. However, officials confirmed they were both men and were from the Powderly area. Their ages were not yet released.

DPS and Smith County authorities responded to the crash. DPS then handed the investigation to the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, Albritton said.

“Unfortunately, it happens a lot around here,” he said. “We get out there to provide security for the team, make sure nobody’s coming messing with (the crash site) or anything. Then when the federal investigators get there, we kind of leave it up to them.”

The National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report is expected within 30 days of the crash.

“The preliminary report will contain factual information gathered during the initial phase of the investigation,” the NTSB said. “A probable cause of the crash, along with any contributing factors, will be detailed in the final report, which is expected in 12-24 months.”

The NTSB is asking those who witnessed the crash or those who may have surveillance video are asked to contact the officials at witness@ntsb.gov.
