A Smith County firefighter was struck by a vehicle while responding to a crash Sunday night on Farm-to-Market 850.

The Smith County Emergency Services District 2 (ESD2) is searching for the driver of a 1990s model GMC Sierra 1500 step side who fled after hitting the firefighter at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The injured firefighter was swiftly transported to a hospital, treated, and has since been released to recover at home, the Smith County ESD2 said.

“This is the second time one of our firemen has been hit in the last month,” Smith County ESD2 noted in a Facebook post.

The department had previously raised concerns about vehicles bypassing traffic cones at emergency scenes.

The post emphasized the importance of driver attentiveness, stating, “Our firemen have wives, children, and families of their own. This should not be happening.”
