Volleyball Notebook: Rusk’s Jazz Blankinship takes weekly honor

Rusk’s Jazz Blankinship is the Tyler Morning Telegraph Volleyball Player of the Week.

Rusk’s Jazz Blankinship has earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Volleyball Player of the Week honors for matches played Oct. 3-8.

Blankinship had 42 kills, 26 blocks and five digs as the Lady Eagles had a win over Jacksonville and a loss to Palestine.

In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):

Brownsboro’s Khayla Garrett had 22 kills, six blocks, 15 digs and two aces in wins over Mabank and Athens. Rilee Rinehart had 52 assists and 17 digs. Brownsboro (21-7) will host Van on Tuesday and Canton on Friday.

Canton’s Airianna Pickens had 16 kills, four blocks and five digs in a win over Lindale. Georgia Crayton had 42 assists, 11 digs, two blocks, three kills and an ace for Canton (25-7, 7-0). Jaycee Bullard had 17 digs.



Beckville’s Avery Morris had a 45 kills, including a personal-best of 27 kills in a win against Union Grove. Morris also had 16 digs three aces and a block. Sophie Elliott had 71 assists, 14 digs, three kills, seven aces and a block.

Multiple East Texas teams earned a spot in the Texas Girls Coaches Association state rankings.

In Class 5A, Hallsville (30-5) is No. 9. In Class 4A, Canton (25-7) is No. 9, Spring Hill (25-7) No. 13, Bullard (28-8) No. 15 and Pleasant Grove (26-8) No. 23. In Class 3A, White Oak (32-7) is No. 8, Tatum (33-6) is No. 9, Mount Vernon (22-2) No. 12, Central Heights (30-8) No. 16, Edgewood (26-8) No. 18, Mineola (25-8) No. 22 and Atlanta (18-6) No. 23. In Class 2A, Beckville (26-10) is No. 7. In Class 1A, Neches (23-8) is No. 6.
