Johnny's Greatest Hits

Columbia Records on this date in 1958 released “Johnny’s Greatest Hits,” a compilation of hits by Gilmer native Johnny Mathis. 

The album made the best-selling albums chart on April 14, and remarkably remained on the chart for more than 10 years. The  longevity record stood for decades and served as a testament to his enduring popularity.

“Johnny’s Greatest Hits” sold more than 1 million copies.

— 1944: Panola County native Tex Ritter stars in “Oklahoma Raiders.”
