First Baptist Church in Tyler will have its annual Thanksgiving grocery and ham ministry event at 9 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot at 412 W. Ferguson St. About 75 to 90 volunteers from the church, ranging from children to senior adults, will be on hand to welcome and serve the sacks to those in need.

Each sack includes essentials for a Thanksgiving meal — canned goods like green beans, corn and sweet potatoes as well as a cornbread and a cake mix and icing. Each family also will receive a whole ham. Members of the First Baptist Church of Tyler, South Spring Baptist Church, tenants of the Plaza Tower in downtown Tyler and the Bethesda Health Clinic all contributed by filling and providing the grocery sacks for this year’s event. Each year an anonymous donor generously writes a $10,000 check to purchase the hams as well.
