Mineola ISD is the area’s newest “District of Innovation.”

The school district submitted its adopted plan to Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath on Aug. 1, according to a news release.

The status is the culmination of an eight-month process, which involved more than 80 community members and staff as well as student representatives.

The status allows districts most of the flexibilities afforded to charter schools, such as providing district exemptions on school start times, minimum number of minutes, class-size ratios and more.

“Becoming a District of Innovation gives us the opportunity to utilize flexibility and obtain more local control as we continue to transform and create a high-quality learning experience for our students,” Superintendent Kim Tunnell said. “We recognize that our school system needs to evolve from the industrial era mentality of factory line production towards a more personalized approach to enable our students to excel in a customized environment.”
