WHITEHOUSE – Thanks to two relay victories apiece, the Longview girls and Nacogdoches boys took a Day 1 lead at the District 15/16-5A track and field championships following Thursday’s events at Wildcat Stadium.

All running events except the 1,600-meter run were held Thursday, with the field events, originally slated for Thursday morning, scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday. The 1,600 will be 11 a.m. Friday.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the Class 5A Region II meet at UT Arlington next week.

The Lady Lobos pulled away from the pack Thursday with 90 points, 24 ahead of second-place Texas High at 66. District 15-5A dominated the first day on the girls side, with district champion Whitehouse the top-ranked 16-5A team in eighth place on 17 points.

Nacogdoches led a close race on the boys side with 56 points, just ahead of Pine Tree at 55. Host Whitehouse sits in third at 49 while John Tyler is still in it with 44 points.

“I think that sets us up to win an area championship,” JT boys track coach Torey Elder said. “(Friday) we have more scoring opportunities than they do so if our kids come out and do what they’re supposed to do we should be area champions.”

Among the Lions competing in field events Friday are district champions in the discus and shot put (Braylon Jones), triple jump (Bryston Smith) and pole vault (Jesse Darden).

On Thursday, John Tyler advanced its 400-meter relay team and individuals Bryston Gipson (100, 200), Duntayviun Gross (400), Ke’tavion Humber (110 hurdles) and Kiante Stoker (110 hurdles) to the regional meet.

Gipson, a senior, took second in the 100 and third in the 200 while also running first on the fourth-place 400 relay team.

In the 100, Gipson finished 0.01 seconds ahead of fellow defensive back Brandon Jones of Nacogdoches but off the pace of Whitehouse’s Shemar Smith, who set the area record with a blazing 10.44.

Smith, who signed to run at Houston Baptist on Friday, broke the mark set last year by JT’s Cedric Mosley.

Another Wildcat who will be running in college set an area record in the 400. Chance Stephenson blazed his way to a time of 48.04 but had to hold off a late push from Pine Tree’s Eric Hawkins (48.08), who had already won the 800.

Stephenson, a recent Texas Tech signee, ran out of gas in the 200, run shortly after the 400, and didn’t qualify after winning the 16-5A title last week.

The winner of the 200, Nacogdoches’ Alex Gregory, was another multi-event star and broke the meet record with a time of 21.42, edging out Smith (21.68) and Gipson (21.97).

Gregory also paced the Dragons to victories in the 400 and 800 relays, helping Nacogdoches stake the Day 1 lead over Pine Tree, which won the 1,600 relay. The Dragons set a school record in the 4×100.

An area record was also set in the girls 200, where Deja Moore of Longview won one of her three gold medals.

Moore led a 1-2-3 Longview sweep in the 200 with at time of 24.70 and paced the pack in the 100 at 12.21. Moore ran anchor on the Lady Lobos’ 800 meter relay team, which won by nearly four seconds ahead of Pine Tree.

The Longview girls also won the 1,600 relay while Hallsville claimed the 400 relay.

The John Tyler boys nearly qualified in the 1,600 relay when Gross tracked down Hallsville’s Colby Mason from 15 meters back, but Mason made a late surge to hold him off and finish fourth.

“Coming out of the curve I thought DunDun had him, but I guess the guy from Hallsville was saving a little bit more at the end,” Elder said.

Gross will run next week, however, having booked his spot with a third-place finish in the 400.

Joining him will be JT’s two hurdlers, Humber and Stoker. The duo finished third and fourth in the 110 hurdles behind Lufkin’s LaVonte White and Greenville’s Thomas Gore.

“It was great; that’s what they were supposed to do,” Elder said. “Time wise they had the third and fourth fastest times coming in. I was hoping they could better that but they get another opportunity next week at regional track.”

In addition to Smith and Stephenson, Whitehouse was aided by its third-place 400 relay as well as freshman Theron Franklin-Cobb, who finished fourth in the 300 hurdles to advance to regionals. On the girls side, Macy Smith took third in the 100 hurdles to move on for the LadyCats.

Two Lindale Lady Eagles booked trips to Arlington: Landen Smith-Weerts with a bronze in the 800 and Tyra Rodden, who finished fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Now after a day of running, the attention shifts to field events, which for once will be the climax of the track meet after threat of rain postponed the competitions to Friday.

“It’s kind of crazy because you expect the field events and then come back (for running events),” Elder said. “But it’s OK – some adversity that we have to overcome. I brought some of my kids with us just to support the other kids and that’s what I’ll do tomorrow. I’ll bring the whole team back so they can support the field events.”
