One dead after car drives into Sabine River

(UPDATED May 4, 2015 at 4:04 pm CT) LONGVIEW (KYTX) – The Texas DPS has identified the driver of a truck that plunged into the Sabine River as 65-year-old Dewayne Obermeyer of Weatherford, TX.

DPS Trooper Jean Dark says a preliminary report indicates Obermeyer was traveling at a high rate of speed, and following too close behind a truck driven by Alvin Smith of Athens. Obermeyer clipped Smith’s vehicle and lost control, struck a guardrail, and drove into the Sabine River.

Obermeyer was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith was not injured in the two-vehicle wreck.

It happened near I-20 exit 595 around 6:23 p.m. Sunday afternoon in Longview.

LONGVIEW (KYTX) – One person is confirmed dead after a vehicle drove off Interstate 20 and into a river.

It happened near the I-20 exit 595 around 6:23 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

A Game warden on scene says the driver lost control of a pick-up truck and went over the guard rail plunging into the Sabine river.

A body has been recovered from the river. The vehicle has also been recovered and towed. 

No other injuries were reported.

The name of the deceased has not been released.
