Leverett’s Chapel 59, Chester 30

CHESTER — The Leverett’s Chapel Lions played a whole game against the Chester Yellowjackets.

This is the first time in three years a Lions’ six-man game with the Yellowjackets has gone past halftime. The previous three games Leverett’s Chapel 45-pointed Chester in the first half to take early wins.

On Friday, the Lions won 59-30.

“It was a hard-fought game against Chester. They came in with a good game plan, they pounded us with their big kids, and they wore us down,” LC head coach Matt Everett. “We hung in there and won the game.”

The Lions had a total of 216 yards on the night, while holding the Yellowjackets to 163. The Lions rushed for 96 yards and threw for 120, while the Jackets had 89 yards on the ground and 73 yards passing.

Freshman Jimmy Gibson was 9 for 16 passing. He threw three touchdowns to Keaton Vaughan ( 3, 20 and 41 yards).

Senior Dylan Cooley also had three rushing TDs of 28, 5 and 22 yards.

Cooley ran the ball five times for 51 yards, and caught three passes for 41 yards for the Lions.

“Cooley had a huge game for us on offense and defense tonight. We started giving the ball to him and let him run,” Everett said.

Also helping the Lions score was Colby Shaw, who scored on an 8-yard run and a 37-yard fumble recovery to end the game.
