President Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate John Garrison as U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Texas in Tyler.

A news release from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s office announced the nomination Wednesday. Cornyn and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz released statements after the nomination.

“Having served 28 distinguished years with the U.S. Marshals Service in the Eastern District of Texas, John is a prime candidate to lead the office,” Cornyn said. “I applaud the president for his nomination of John Garrison, and I look forward to supporting his swift confirmation in the Senate.”

If confirmed, Garrison will serve as U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Texas. Garrison is a retired judicial security inspector for the U.S. Marshals Service Eastern District of Texas.

He joined the Marshals Service in 1990 as a deputy U.S. marshal and spent his entire 28-years of service in the Eastern District of Texas, serving as the district’s sex offender investigations coordinator, judicial security inspector and acting assistant chief.

He also served as a member of the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and the Marshals Service Special Operations Group.

He formerly served as a deputy sheriff for the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office in Alexandria, Louisiana, from 1987 to 1989.

Garrison also served in the Marine Corps from 1977 to 1980.

“John Garrison has served the Eastern District of Texas with distinction and professionalism for 28 years, and I urge his swift confirmation,” Cruz said. “I’m grateful President Trump has nominated him to be the U.S. marshal for the Eastern District, where he will continue to serve East Texans well.”
