BBB to honor charter members at luncheon

Published 10:52 pm Saturday, January 24, 2015

The Better Business Bureau Serving Central East Texas is celebrating its 30th anniversary and plans to recognize the 97 businesses that became charter members to help get the organization started at its annual luncheon on Wednesday.

Also at the event, three companies and one nonprofit organization will receive the BBB Awards for Excellence.

“The goal of the BBB Awards for Excellence is to recognize the businesses and nonprofits in our area which  practice high ethical standards toward customers, suppliers, users, shareholders, employees and communities in which they do business,” Mechele Agbayani Mills, BBB president and chief executive officer of the BBB, said. “The awards allow businesses and charities the opportunity to spotlight the great things they do every day in furthering marketplace trust and integrity.”

Mrs. Mills expects about 300 people to attend the luncheon, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The University of Texas at Tyler Ornelas Activity Center. As of Thursday afternoon, the event was close to being sold out but Monday is the deadline to buy the $40 tickets. For ticket information, contact Melissa Jones, director of administration at 903-581-5888 ext. 109 or mjones@easttexas.bbb.org.

The BBB will present its year-end review and honor the 97 companies who helped get the local organization started 30 years ago, Mrs. Mills said.

The national BBB system was founded in 1912 by ethical business owners frustrated by having to compete with companies that were using misleading advertising to attract customers, Mrs. Mills said.

BBB Serving Central East Texas was formed in 1985 with support from the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and the 97 East Texas businesses who became charter members. BBB provides service to 19 East Texas counties through the support of local businesses and charities who have met BBB Accreditation Standards. BBB services are free to the public and are available for both BBB accredited businesses and non-accredited businesses, she said.
