Child hospitalized after gunshots fired from vehicle

LUFKIN — An East Texas child was taken to the hospital Sunday night after shots were fired from a vehicle in Lufkin.
A child from Nacogdoches was walking home after being with friends who live nearby in the 600 block of Kurth Drive around 10 p.m. That’s when a suspicious vehicle pulled up and a person fired two gunshots, Lufkin Police Department Detective Cody Deal.

The child was shot in the abdomen. After he was shot, the boy called his friends to take him to the hospital. He was transferred to a Houston hospital.
Deal said a nurse at St. Luke’s Health-Memorial reported the shooting to police. Details about the boy’s condition are unknown at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
