Brookshire Grocery Co. is giving senior citizens a 5% discount on purchases and waiving fees for curbside pickup orders through May 5.

The Tyler-based food chain said the steps are being taken in response to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. Health officials have said that senior citizens are among the most vulnerable people and that all people should practice social distancing for the time being.

The policy is in effect at the company’s Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and FRESH by Brookshire’s stores. The discount is available to guests age 60 or older with a valid ID.

In a statement released Wednesday, the food chain also is encouraging patrons to let the first hour stores are open to be only a time that seniors shop and to let seniors go to the front of check-out lines throughout the day.

“Since 1928, courteous and compassionate service has remained at the core of who we are and what we stand for,” Brad Brookshire, chairman and CEO for Brookshire Grocery Co., said in the news release. “We believe it is incredibly important for all of us to be kind to those around us. During these times of concern about COVID-19, we are asking you to join in our efforts to take care of our senior neighbors and others who are most vulnerable.”
