DR DUCK and MRS. DR DUCK with her Texas spring gobbler.

Lot’s of posts out there on social media about missing duck season, #duckdepression they call it.

There is no doubt that duck hunting is my passion and has been since @thefowlhunter and I decided to try and start figuring out the game 20–some years ago. But I have also learned through personal experience how time can really fly and life can quickly get away if you don’t pay enough attention to today.

Now don’t get me wrong, I wake up on most mornings hearing a roost full of green heads begging me to come see them, but work hard to quickly turn my attention to family. My wife, Mrs. Dr. Duck, shot her first turkey this spring. While working through her wardrobe was probably the toughest part of her preparation, I am thankful to Brian Parker and his wife for being a great host out west. I am also thankful we are a baseball family; she definitely tried to work the count and ended up luckily digging herself out of an 0-2 hole before connecting on a pretty solid single.

I was pretty sure, as competitive as she is the next trigger pull might have been my direction had she not come through in the clutch. Definitely an experience I hope not to soon forget.

Our youngest is finishing up his 8th grade year, playing football, baseball, lifting weights and I have been fortunate enough to have time to help coach his school team; what a great opportunity to have impact on young men at a great age of coming in to those important high school years, another opportunity I hope not to soon forget.

Our oldest is the better part of his way through his senior season playing left field for the Texas Aggies. It is important to us to make as many of these games as we can, which included a super trip over to Mississippi State for Bulldog Weekend in which we got to share some time with the @southernbrakeoutdoors boys and see TAMU sweep the ‘Dogs. That school does a great job hosting college baseball and everyone was incredibly courteous, again another experience I hope not to soon forget.

As many great memories as the unforgettable whistling wings seasons bring, I am thankful for each off-season as well. I am thankful for the opportunity to get ready for next year without rushing through the tremendous life lessons and memories that are being taught and provided for me through the incredible blessing of family.

I would love to hear what keeps you busy during the off-season and what you are thankful for.
