Reservations being taken for Mexico fishing trip

Tyler Paper Outdoors is making a return trip to bass fish at Mexico's Lake Picachos. Working with Ron Speed Jr.'s Adventures, Tyler Paper Outdoors is booking a four-day fishing trip to the lake April 11 to 15. There are 12 slots available on the trip.

Cost of the four-day's fishing with lodging and meals on Picachos is $1,895. Other costs will include roundtrip airfare to and from D/FW, ground transportation, a night's stay in Mazatlan and gratuities.

The trip will begin April 11 with a flight from D/FW International Airport. Fishing days will be April 12 to 15.

The party will return to Mazatlan and spend the night at the El Cid Castilla Beach Hotel before a returning flight April 16.

Located about an hour's drive east from the Mazatlan airport, Picachos is an estimated 14,000-acre reservoir that was carved out of the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains to serve as an irrigation and water supply lake.

It was opened to recreational fishing in early 2013 and has already produced a lake record topping 13 pounds. Speed's fishermen averaged more than 100 fish per day on the lake last year.

Going in mid-April will put fishermen on the lake at a prime time to catch numbers of bass weighing from 2 to 7 pounds, but also with an opportunity to catch a big fish. Last year's trip resulted in at least one bass weighing double digits.

The trip is also scheduled after local commercial netters have left the lake for the season. Like the other lakes in Mexico, Picachos is commercially fished for tilapia by fishermen from the nearby towns. However, the town of Puerta de San Marcos owns the lodge and works to protect the bass in the lake for tourism. The nets should be removed in time for the April trip.

While most fishermen come armed with large soft plastic baits and spinners, more are starting to use other options including crankbaits, topwaters and jigs.Fishing is from 17-foot Xpress bass boats, and Speed employs locals who have been trained by the outfitter as guides.

Airline regulations makes carrying rods difficult so Speed provides rods at the lodge for the fishermen.

Fishermen must bring their own reels and spare line. Because of the submerged brush 17-pound test line is the minimum and 20-pound is recommended.

The fishing lodge was completed in 2014 and features one and two bedroom casitas.

Fishermen will receive three full meals daily at the camp.
