Summit holds off Dragons

FORNEY — Sophomore quarterback Braden Nolen passed for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mansfield Summit over Nacogdoches, 25-15, in a Class 4A Region II Division I playoff at City Bank Stadium.
Summit running back Jordan Hester had 47 yards on the opening drive and finished with an 11-yard score for an early 7-0 lead.
Nacogdoches had a pair of long drives in the first half that flamed out in the end zone. After going 58 yards on 15 plays, Bryce Matthews pass on fourth and 5 was broken up at the goal line. Matthews was intercepted in the end zone on the next possession.
Meanwhile, Summit receiver Johnson Ubani added a 14-yard touchdown in the second quarter before Ryan Rodriguez closed the half with a 54-yard field goal and an 18-0 lead.
Nacogdoches (6-5) struggled mightily in the third quarter, losing three straight fumbles and turning the ball over on downs.
Backup quarterback James Oglesbee entered the game in the fourth quarter and led a short rally with 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns to L.J. Barnes and Brandon Jones. Jones, a highly recruited sophomore, took a short slant and raced across the field untouched for 61 yards on the game’s final play from scrimmage.
Summit (6-5) advances to face Wylie in the area round, location has not yet been determined.
