OVERTON — Overton sophomore running back Jamal Kelly carried his team in Friday night’s season opener with 141 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 attempts in the Mustangs’ 32-14 win over the Cayuga Wildcats.

Kelly’s first touchdown came on the game’s first drive. With his team on the Cayuga five-yard line, he brought it to the one to set up the one-yard run on the next play. K’Jheryion Luster connected with Tim Hawkins on the two-point conversion to go up 8-0 with 7:31 left in the first.

Cayuga responded in the second quarter with a 21-yard quarterback sneak from senior Jake Nash. The extra point cut the lead to 8-7

No one struck again until 4:57 left in the third quarter. Luster connected on his only completion of the night to Hawkins on a 28-yarder to spread the lead to 16-7. Luster then ran it in for the two point conversion to spread the lead to 16-7.

Overton continued to pour it on, and converted on the two-point conversions every time. Kelly tacked on his second touchdown as Luster snuck in his second two-point conversion to go up 24-7.

Cayuga then scored and lined up for the extra point only to have the touchdown taken away due to a forward pass. The Wildcats weren’t able to capitalize on the drive and they gave it back to the Mustangs.

Overton scored its last touchdown on a two-yard run from Luster as Austin McCasland ran in the two-point conversion.

Cayuga scored its last touchdown with 2:31 left to play when Nash connected with Dan Holly from 18 yards out.

Cayuga is slated to take on Mount Enterprise on the road nest Friday and Overton will host Union Grove.
