East Texas teams shine on Day 1 of state 7-on-7

COLLEGE STATION — It was a strong opening statement from East Texas on Day 1 of the Adidas Texas 7-on-7 Championships held Thursday at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.
The first day was reserved for Division II pool play with Chapel Hill, Canton and Gilmer all going undefeated in their three games to book places in today’s championship bracket.
Single-elimination play begins at 9 a.m. today with Chapel Hill facing Sweetwater, Canton matched up against Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill and Gilmer battling Stafford. The winners of those contests move on to the second round at 10:15 a.m.; followed by the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m., semifinals at 2 p.m. and championship at 3:30 p.m.
Bulldogs coach Kelly Hitchcock said his players were going to use the night to rest and recuperate to be ready “when the real tournament begins.”
With quarterback Konnor Hitchcock pulling the strings under center, Chapel Hill cruised through Pool D play with wins over Navarro (33-20), Stafford (45-32) and West (33-27).
The win over West was important because a loss would’ve made a three-way tie with West and Stafford at 2-1. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the championship bracket with the third and fourth-place teams in the consolation bracket. If a three-way tie occurs, the top two teams are determined by points scored.
Hitchcock and receivers Deundre Phillips, Zack Walters and Reggie King took care of business on the field to finish first in the pool.
“This year we’ve got such incredible athletes at all of the positions,” Hitchcock said. “We have a lot of speed and a lot of guys with good hands, so it really is a team effort.
“We started off a little slow the first game and it seemed like the second half we picked it up.”
Hitchcock said the sauna-like temperatures made it difficult for everyone, but his team was able to push through and are back in the championship bracket.
“We we have to go back and get some food and hydrated and relax and try to forget about today’s games,” Hitchcock said. “We all feel good about what we’ve done so far, but last year we got eliminated in the first round, so we’re hoping that we can go further than that.”
Both Gilmer and Canton survived the first-round hurdle in the championship bracket a year ago. Canton was knocked out in the second round with Gilmer stopped in the quarterfinals.
Sabine, playing in its first-ever state tournament, went 0-3 in pool play to finish fourth and be placed in the consolation bracket. The Tigers will face Thorndale at 8 a.m. Friday.
Action begins for John Tyler, Robert E. Lee and Whitehouse
While Division II races to the finish line, pool play will begin today for Division I with John Tyler and Whitehouse looking to go even further this year while REL aims to erase a dismal 2013 showing.
John Tyler is grouped in Pool M with Arlington Bowie, Houston Bellaire and Somerset. The Lions reached the consolation bracket quarterfinals a year ago. Their first game will take place at 2 p.m. against Somerset.
Robert E. Lee is grouped in Pool J with Lucas Lovejoy, Katy Seven Lakes and Fort Worth South Hills. The Red Raiders lost all three pool games a year ago by a combined 133-52 before bowing out in the first round of the consolation bracket. Lee looks to make amends with a 2 p.m. matchup against South Hills.
Whitehouse is grouped in Pool G with Alamo Heights, Copperas Cove and Cy Fair. The Wildcats went 2-1 last year in pool play to advance into the championship bracket but were stopped 40-35 in the first round by Lake Travis. Whitehouse begins its quest again at 1 p.m. against Cy Fair.
