When power outages strike in East Texas: secondary power options

- The Generator Supercenter of Tyler offers service, maintenance, and installation in addition to the sale of power generators.
After a major storm unexpectedly hit East Texas, causing power surges in and around the Tyler area, many people were left without electricity for hours at a time, some of which were elderly people who needed access to medical equipment.
Stephen Cruise, Vice President of Generator Supercenter in Tyler, hopes to make the community aware of alternative power options, especially for the elderly population who are at risk when outages occur.
“The Tyler area is home to lots of elderly folks who are in need of backup generators for medicinal reasons. In some cases it can be life or death. When a storm goes through East Texas, there will be outages due to an aging infrastructure, big trees, and overhanging power lines. I hope to educate customers on options to prevent power loss,” said Cruise.
According to Cruise, the latest and greatest backup generator option is their Automix home generators, produced by Generac.
“It is designed to be user friendly, so that the aging with medically limited mobility don’t have to do anything to operate it,” he said. “When power is interrupted, it senses the power loss and sends the message to the generator. It gets you disconnected from utility power to automatic generator power.”
He continued to explain that when power is restored, the system will automatically reconnect back to the power grid and turn the generator off.
Although Cruise said this is a the most user-friendly option, he does inform potential customers that purchasing a backup generator is a commitment, and not a one-time purchase.
“This is not a one-time purchase. There is service and maintenance involved, very similar to vehicle maintenance. It’s a commitment,” he said.
That maintenance includes once a year preventative maintenance, oil, oil filter, spark plug, and air filter tuneups. Maintenance will cost between $200 to $450, said Cruise.
“Typically it costs between $8,000 and $11,000 to purchase and have it installed in Tyler. It will last as long as you take care of it, much like a car. We’ve seen it last 10-20 years,” he said.
The generators use propane as a fuel source. The generator can connected with existing propane tanks, or the company can install one at the residence.
“They don’t have to go out every two hours and get gasoline but they will have to replace it every few days. Some customers have enough to go 10-15 days,” he said.
Another widely popular option is a portable generator, said Cruise.
“For some situations, it’s still a good option if there’s an extended outage. It’s an entry level option. It will allow you to have some power, it’s portable, and allows you to charge your cellphone and your plugs,” he said.
Many people don’t know what they need for essential power, so before making any purchase it’s recommended to call local dealers who will help explain what’s best for each individual’s home setup and overall needs, said Cruise.
“The Generator Supercenter in Tyler is the largest dealer and installer in the nation, and we offer virtual estimates that take a maximum of 30 minutes to complete,” he said. “We are also able to make installations with very little to no contact during this time.”

“It’s important for the public to know about because our lives literally revolve around power,” said Cruise.
