The future of a relic of Longview’s oil boom days remains in limbo, six years after investors announced plans to move the shuttered Longview Refinery to Rusk County and three years after the plant changed hands.
Longview Refinery, which also at one time was called Gregg County Refinery, was sold in 2015 to an energy production company with at least one active refinery. Lazarus Energy Holdings is based in Houston but operates its refinery outside of Nixon near San Antonio.
When it sold three years ago, it remained under a cleanup order from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
EPA spokeswoman Janie Acevedo reported this past week that contaminants on the property are common to refineries. Those include volatile organic chemicals benzene and toluene, metals such as lead and chromium and semi-volatile chemicals such as benzo anthracene.
