This Saturday is the Pets Fur People Pets in the Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Bergfeld Park. Last year, they asked if I would create a dog treat recipe for the event and give out treats to all the dogs there.

It was a great event and all the dogs loved the treats. These are easy to make, and full of natural ingredients. Make some today and your dog will love them too.

Homemade Dog Treats

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup plain oats

1/2 cup smooth low-sodium, natural peanut butter

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/2 to 3/4 cup low-sodium or unsalted chicken broth

1 teaspoon baking powder

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl combine the flour, oats and baking powder. Heat the peanut butter in the microwave for 20 seconds. Add to the dry ingredients and then add the applesauce. Combine with a spatula. Add the broth 1/4 cup at a time while working the dough into a thick log. Break off sections and roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Using a one-inch round biscuit cutter to cut the dough into circles. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes until lightly browned. Allow to cool completely.  Store in an airtight container. Makes approximately 140 small bite-size treats.
