BROWNSBORO — Brownsboro High School had two student-athletes sign on Tuesday morning to compete at the next level.
Tiykeah McKenzie will play basketball at Weatherford College, and Cam Anderson will play football at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
“I liked the environment,” McKenzie said. “It’s close to home. I like the players and the coaches are really good. I know I’ll be able to work hard to get better in those two years and then just see where I go from there.”
McKenzie led the Bearettes to a 21-12 record and the second round of the playoffs this season. She also plays volleyball and runs the 400-meter dash in track, where she will compete at the area meet on Thursday in Lindale.
“They’re getting an incredible athlete,” Brownsboro head girls basketball coach Jeremy Durham said. “She’s been a huge part of our entire athletic program, volleyball, basketball and track. She’s had this goal since before I got here. We’ve talked about it a hundred times. I’m thrilled for her that she’s getting the opportunity.
“She’s an explosive athlete and I think when she gets the opportunity to focus on one sport, she’s really going to blossom. We’re proud of her and happy for her and can’t wait to see what she gets done.”
McKenzie said her defense should help her make an immediate impact and that she looks to improve her shooting from everyone on the floor and being more consistent.
Weatherford competes in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference in NJCAA Region V with McLennan, Grayson, Collin County, Temple, Cisco, Ranger, Hill and Southwestern Christian.
McKenzie said she will probably major in either nursing or business.
Anderson will head to Belton to play center for Mary Hardin-Baylor.
“I saw my future in not only football but also education,” Anderson said. “It had a mostly medical background, which is what I’m wanting to do in case football is not the plan I will do all my life. I want to continue my career in what else I want to do.”
Anderson said he will major in biology with the hopes of being an anesthesiologist assistant.
“They’re getting a hard worker and an extremely intelligent player,” Brownsboro head football coach and athletic director Lance Connot said. “He’s somebody who is fun to be around and just an all around good person. Cam is a big strong kid in the weight room and does everything right. He’s going to continue to get better and better at the next level.”
Mary Hardin-Baylor competes in the American Southwest Conference in NCAA Division III with Hardin-Simmons, East Texas Baptist and Howard Payne.
