Many teens dream of dressing up and looking their best for prom, but buying the dress, the shoes and all of the accessories can get expensive. That’s where the I Am Beautiful Movement comes in with its GlamProm Dress Closet Expo.
The organization provides a way for girls in East Texas and the surrounding area to attend prom by giving them a free dress and accessories. It also will assist with other expenses that come along with attending prom, if needed.
“We feel that every girl should feel glamorous on her prom night and every girl should have opportunity to attend prom,” program director LaToyia Session-Jordan said.
This is the third year for the organization to give high school girls attending junior or senior prom a free dress from the GlamProm Dress Closet. Hairstylists, makeup artists, style influencers and nail technicians were also in attendance, and the Vista College Cosmetology Department was there providing makeup and hairstyling. Girls received “glam bags” filled with Mary Kay products, coupons and business cards to local beauty and apparel shops.
GlamProm will continue from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cindy’s Event Center at 2900 Old Henderson Highway. Students receiving a dress must come with a parent or guardian and bring their student ID if they have one.
The organization also is hosting a prom fashion fundraiser show Saturday called Glamorous in Wonderland at 7 p.m. at Cindy’s Event Center. A $5 donation is requested at the door, though high school juniors and seniors get in free with a student ID.
DJ Juice from 102.7 and 106.9 The Blaze will be the guest host, and spoken-word poets will perform. During the fashion show, Jos. A. Bank will give away suits to two young men.
Sponsorships and monetary donations can be made at www.paypal.me/empowerus or www.iambeautifulmovement.org
The I Am Beautiful Movement will accept dress donations through Saturday and will start collecting dresses again in September or October.
Dress drop-off locations include Rayson’s Automotive, 1326 W. Gentry Parkway; the UPS Store, 3872 Texas Highway 64 W; and the East Texas Cornerstone Assistance Network, 200 N. Beckham Ave. People are also welcome to drop off dresses at the event. For more information about donating dresses, email glampromdresscloset@gmail.com.
