Texas true freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger looked more like a seasoned-veteran in the Longhorns double-overtime win over Kansas State on Saturday in Austin.

Following just his third collegiate start, Ehlinger was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the sixth week of the college football season, Cindy Smoak, SPORTyler vice president, announced on Tuesday.

Ehlinger, a native of Austin, led Texas to a 40-34 win over the Wildcats at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

The Austin Westlake High School graduate completed 30 of 50 pass attempts for 380 yards and two touchdowns. He added 107 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

His 487 yards of total offense were the third-most in school history, behind just Jerrod Heard (2015) and Vince Young (2005). He also became the third player, joining Heard (2015) and Colt McCoy (2009), to throw for at least 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in a game.

Ehlinger’s 380 passing yards were a new school record for a true freshman quarterback, while it was the 10th-most for any player all-time. His 107 rushing yards were the second-most by a true freshman quarterback in school history. Ehlinger’s 30 pass completions and 50 attempts were both new career highs. The 30 completions were the 11th-most in school history, while his 50 attempts were the fifth-most for a single game.

Ehlinger and the Longhorns will travel to Dallas Saturday for the annual AT&T Red River Showdown. Kickoff inside the Cotton Bowl is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.

The award, which is named after 1977 Heisman Trophy and Longhorn Earl Campbell, is given annually to the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits enduring characteristics that define Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity. It addition, it is limited to players who were born in the state of Texas, attended a Texas high school or attended a Texas junior college or university.
