Spring football is over and the question of who will be Robert E. Lee’s starting quarterback in the fall has not yet been determined — and head coach Darrel Piske believes that could be considered a positive.

“We still have some closeness at the quarterback position and that’s been a good part because we’ve been competitive,” Piske said. “We’ve battled every day. Raleigh Poster is our (returning starter) at quarterback, but Trevor Carr and Zach Hall are pushing him.

“No one has really just stepped (to the forefront). One may be a better passer and another is clearly a better runner, and another commands the offense better.”

The three combatants will have one final chance in this school year to display their talents under center as Lee completes spring with its annual Red-White Game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Tickets are $3 for adults and free for Lee students.

Piske said the first team players are expected to be on the field the first two quarters with the JV and freshmen players featured in the second half.

“Some of the starters may not play much at all,” Piske said.

The Red Raiders went 1-9 in Piske’s first season in charge. It marked the second straight 1-9 season for Lee, which has won four games combined in the last three years after reaching the Class 5A regional quarterfinals in 2009.

Poster completed 52 of 108 pass attempts last year for 602 yards and a touchdown with six interceptions. Carr quarterbacked the JV to a 5-5 overall record and 3-2 in district with Hall leading the Lee Freshmen Red team to a 6-3-1 record and district championship.

Piske is changing the REL offense completely to a spread after the Red Raiders attempted to phase it in a little last year. Under former head coach Mike Owens and interim coach Randy Huffstickler, the Red Raiders were predominantly in a pro set or would use multiple formations.

Now it is spread all the time with the quarterback being asked to run as well as throw.

REL worked in this offense throughout the spring with Poster, Carr and Hall all taking turns.

“We’re getting there,” Piske said. “We still have a ways to go in understanding the total concepts. We can at least run a route and catching it and those kinds of things, but we just have to get a little better at reading coverages on the run and understanding the weaknesses in different coverages and those kinds of things.”

Lee graduated a good portion of its offensive line and all of its varsity tailbacks. Piske believes he’s found the right players for next season and now needs to develop more.

“I’ve been really pleased with the O-line,” Piske said. “We need 10, but we have nine guys who we really won’t miss a beat with any of them. Our O-line and D-line have been getting after each other every day.

“Really, offensively and defensively the main issue is depth, but if we can get out of the (spring game) without any (injuries) it will be great.”
