When heading to the polls for the Presidential Election, voters must leave their political apparel at home. Electioneering or campaigning is not allowed within 100 feet of any polling place.
Many voters are arriving in political shirts and hats, said Smith County Elections Administrator Michelle Allcon. Those individuals are being asked to remove such items before casting their ballots.
Polling places are marked with 100-foot distance markers to maintain a clear boundary for campaigning. Inside this designated area, electioneering, or campaigning or advocating for a specific candidate, political party, is strictly prohibited.
This includes any expression of support or opposition toward candidates, measures or political parties, whether or not they are on the ballot.
The early voting clerk and presiding judge have the discretion to enforce these rules to ensure the polling place operates safely and efficiently. Violating these regulations could lead to a Class C misdemeanor citation.
