The Tyler Football Classic has, well, become a Tyler classic.
The 12th annual Azalea Orthopedics and Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Tyler Football Classic is scheduled for Aug. 31 to Sept. 2 at Bishop Gorman’s McCallum Stadium, event sponsors announced on Tuesday.
Rod Kaspar, Gorman athletic director, made the announcement during a luncheon provided by Fuzzy Tacos at Haddad Gymnasium.
The Classic is hosted by the Tyler-area private schools and each school rotates as host every two years.
All Saints Episcopal, Bishop Gorman Regional Catholic School and Grace Community organized the Classic with Waxahachie Life School, Dallas A+ Academy and Garrison coming to the Rose City for the Classic.
“We are excited to be in our 12th year of sponsoring the Azalea Orthopedics and Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Tyler Football Classic,” Dr. Kim Foreman, orthopedic and sports medicine specialist, said. “It is a fun event and a great way for players, coaches, families and fans to kick off the season.”
The schedule is: Grace vs. Waxahachie Life, Aug. 31; Gorman vs. Garrison, Sept. 1; and All Saints vs. Dallas A+ Academy, Sept. 2.
All games are slated for 7 p.m. kickoffs, Kaspar said.
“Bishop Gorman is very excited about hosting the 12th annual Azalea Orthopedics and Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Tyler Football Classic,” Kaspar said. “Last year, we saw three highly competitive matchups and we anticipate this year’s contests to be equally intense. Bishop Gorman is blessed to be part of this great event and looks forward to a great weekend of fun, fellowship and football.”
Members of each team, with the exception of A+ Academy, attended the luncheon.
Kaspar added a blessing at the chapel will be made at 5:15 p.m. before each game for the teams.
Two of three Tyler schools have new head coaches — Randy McFarlin at Gorman and Norm Thompson at Grace. All Saints coach Drew Starnes is in his second year at the helm of the Trojans.
