(KYTX)-  One of the two men implicated in last summer’s shooting at the Kensington Apartment complex pleaded guilty to murder in a Smith County courtroom Thursday morning.

19-year-old Earnest Deaurndra Jackson admitted to killing 21-year-old Joshua Robert McGill on June 3, 2013.

McGill’s parents were in the courtroom for the plea hearing. McGill’s mother cried as Jackson admitted his part in the murder.

The plea agreement lowered Jackson’s charge from capital murder to first degree murder, thereby taking the possibility of the death penalty off the table in this case.

Jackson will be sentenced July 18. District Attorney Matt Bingham said he would be asking 114th District Judge Christi Kennedy for a 30-year prison sentence.

McGill was a 2010 Whtehouse High School graduate.
