The Target store in Tyler is expanding its grocery offerings.

Larry Humphries, store team leader, said renovations began about two weeks ago and when completed in July, the store will offer more than 80 percent of what a Super Target store carries.

Although it will be a significant increase of assorted foods, the store will not have a bakery or deli and will not be considered a Super Target, he said.

“We’ll have quite a bit more than we carry today,” Humphries said, adding they will have expanded coolers and freezers filled with perishables.

The store, at 7003 S. Broadway Ave., will not be expanded, but crews are working to reorganize the store. He said they are reallocating the sizes of different departments to expand the grocery offerings.

“I think it will be a great, welcome addition to our guests who have always wanted some more options with their grocery shopping,” Humphries said. “We are going to give them more options there and give them a new and updated and fresher store.”

Target will keep its normal store hours — 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday — throughout the renovation.

“We welcome everyone to come see us through our remodel and see the changes as we go ahead,” he said. “We look forward to offering a new shopping venue to all our guests.”

The 123,000-square-foot Target was constructed about 15 years ago, replacing an older location at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Rice Road.

The first Target store opened in 1962 in the Minneapolis suburb of Roseville, Minn., with a focus on convenient shopping at competitive discount prices. Target is the second-largest general merchandise retailer in America, according to the website.
