VAN — Macailyn Wilder accounted for 270 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Hallsville past Van, 38-26, in non-district football action Friday night at Van Memorial Stadium.
The senior quarterback completed 13 of 21 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns, plus carried the ball 19 times for 99 yards. He went over the century mark rushing in the fourth quarter before suffering back-to-back negative plays to finish with less than 100 yards.
Hallsville, which beat the Vandals 38-13 last season, improved to 1-1 on the year after opening the season last week with a 58-28 loss to Class 4A fifth-ranked Whitehouse. Van, in the meantime, fell to 0-2.
Vandals running back Matt Savis starred on the ground once again, finishing the night with 26 carries for 242 yards and two touchdowns. The junior recorded both touchdowns (31 and 5 yards) in the fourth quarter, during which Van rallied from 25 points down to pull within 12.
Hallsville’s Kha’lil Sneed finished with 14 carries for 99 yards and a score.
Hallsville opened up a 21-7 lead in the first quarter en route to a comfortable 31-13 halftime advantage over the Vandals, who lost on the road another District 14-4A team, Pine Tree, in the season opener.
Hallsville’s first TD came on a 4-yard run by speedster Kha’lil Sneed with 7:44 left in the first quarter. After Van matched the score just over a minute later, the Bobcats got a 58-yard TD connection between Wilder and Jamil Young and a 23-yard scoring run by Dionte Johnson.
In the second quarter, Stephon Dunn scored from five yards out and Paden Brown made a 31-yard field goal to cap Hallsville’s scoring.
Maddox and McGowan accounted for both Vandals scores in the half.
Van returns to action next Friday at home against Lindale. A pre-game ceremony is scheduled to name Memorial Stadium’s Field after longtime Vandals head coach Mal Fowler.
Hallsville returns home to meet Henderson next week.
