Friday Volleyball: Lee into championship bracket

WHITE OAK — Robert E. Lee volleyball is in position to win another tournament.
The Lady Raiders finished first in the pool Friday at the White Oak Tournament, defeating Pleasant Grove and Pine Tree in sweeps before being stopped by Brock in their final game. Brock lost to Pine Tree, which created a three-way tie between the teams at 2-1.
Lee gave up the least amount of points, so the Lady Raiders won the tiebreaker.
REL (14-6) will open up bracket play at 10 a.m. Saturday against Spring Hill.
The Lady Raiders began the day by defeating Pleasant Grove, 25-16, 25-20. Freshman April Brown led the way with seven kills while Claire Himes, Emily Starr and Kayce Brown finished with three apiece. Taylor Winchester had 14 digs with Jamie Mills and Jamesha Hutton each totaling seven digs. Hutton also had three aces with Genesis Borens and Claire Newberry finishing with 11 and 8 assists, respectively.
In their second match, a 25-16, 25-23 win over Pine Tree, Caroline Lynch led offensively with six kills while Mills, Hutton and Himes each had four. Winchester had a team-high 10 digs with Mills and Hutton each finishing with six. Alexa Winfrey had two aces and 13 assists with Borens chipping in 12 assists. April Brown led with 2.5 blocks.
Brock stopped Lee in two games, 25-17, 25-22. Mills and Lynch each had five kills in the loss with Hutton, Starr and April Brown finishing with three kills. Winchester and Hutton totaled 14 and 12 digs, respectively with Borens (10 assists) and Winfrey (9 assists) contributing as well. Hutton also had two aces with Himes, Hutton and April Brown each registering a block.
REL now faces state-ranked Spring Hill for the first time this season.
John Tyler 3, Marshall 2
Johnetta Preston and Shakendra Tilley racked up 13 kills apiece to help John Tyler hold off a pesky Marshall team to defeat the Lady Mavericks 3-2 in five sets Friday at the Lions Den.
The Lady Lions won 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 18-25, 15-8 to raise their overall record to 11-14.
JT led 2-1 in the match before dropping the fourth set 25-18 to set up the deciding fifth set. JT took care of business after that.
