Argentine freshman Leandro Cid Fernandez’ penalty kick was blocked in overtime, but his follow-up shot was not, as the UT Tyler men’s soccer team defeated cross-town opponent Texas College 1-0 on Monday night in a soccer match at Citizen 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
After both teams played to a scoreless 0-0 tie at the end of 90 minutes, Fernandez and the Patriots had a shot to put the game away in the 101st minute mark of the match.
Fernandez was fouled in the box, giving him a penalty kick that was denied by Eduardo Vargas, but the loose ball found Fernandez’s right-foot, who ended the game with a goal from the box.
Vargas, the Steers’ goalie, finished the game with 11 saves, including several highlight reel efforts, keeping the aggressive Patriots off the scoreboard for more than 100 minutes.
UT Tyler controlled the game from the onset, finishing the night with 20 total shots to Texas College’s seven in over 100 minutes played.
Senior Alonso Rivera had a strong night, totaling five shots in the win while applying constant pressure on the stingy TC defense.
UT Tyler plays host to Paul Quinn College at 5 p.m. Friday. The women’s team meets Trinity at 7 p.m.
