Manziel named player of week

Texas A&M sophomore quarterback Johnny Manziel, who put a scare into Nick Saban and No. 1-ranked Alabama, has been named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week, Cindy Smoak, SPORTyler vice president, announced on Monday.

Manziel, who threw for a school-record 464 yards and five touchdowns against the Crimson Tide on Saturday in College Station, is the winner for the third week of the college football season. He also had 98 yards rushing on 14 carries in the Aggies' 49-42 loss to Alabama.

Manziel, who was born in Tyler and whose grandparents still live in the Rose City, is a graduate of Tivy High School in Kerrville and was the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012.

Honorable mention for Week 3 are:

n Texas A&M sophomore wide receiver Mike Evans of Galveston (Ball High School) (seven catches for a school-record 279 yards and a TD).

n Ohio State senior quarterback Kenny Guiton of Houston (Aldine Eisenhower High School) (started in the place of injured Braxton Miller; 21 of 32 pass attempts for 276 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions; 14 carries for 92 yards in the Buckeyes' 52-34 win over California).

n Louisiana-Monroe senior quarterback Kolton Browning of Mabank (43 of 68 pass attempts for 315 yards and three touchdowns; nine carries for 19 yards. It was career highs in both attempts and completions for Browning as the Warhawks defeated Wake Forest 21-19 on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.).

n Northwestern junior running back Treyvon Green of Rowlett (20 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats 38-17 win over Western Michigan).

The Week 1 winner of the Player of the Week honor was East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden of Houston (Episcopal School of Houston), while the Week 2 honoree was Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton of Houston (Cypress Creek HS).

The semifinalist announcement is scheduled for Nov. 18 with the four finalists set for Dec. 2. The banquet and winner of the first Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award will be announced Jan. 10, 2014, in Tyler.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year college.
