BULLARD – The Tyler Junior College golf team opened the spring portion of their schedule on a high note Monday.
The Apaches, led by Oliver White’s 4-under 68, took a commanding first-round lead in the TJC Spring Invitational at Oak Hurst Golf Course.
TJC leads with an 8-under 280 with McLennan Community College second at 4-over 292. Rounding out the top five in the 12-team event are Paris JC (8-over 296), TJC B (19-over 307) and LeTourneau University (24-over 312).
White, a freshman from Harrogate, England, leads the medalist race by one stroke over teammate Wilfredo Sanchez, who carded a 3-under 69. Three other Apaches are in the top five – Clayton Keck is fourth (1-under 71) with Marco Maldonado and Trip Hobson tied for fifth with Ryan Brown and Cory Matthew Donnell, both of MCC. The fifth place golfers all had even-par 70s. Paris’ Preston Woodard is third at 2-under 70.
In the women’s tourney, Redlands CC (Oklahoma) leads with a 314, followed by Western Texas (321) and TJC (324). There are six teams in the field.
Emily Coleman of Western Texas leads the medalist race at 3-over 75. TJC’s Anya Anders and Sofia Alvarez of Western Texas are tied for second at 4-over 76. Redlands’ Magda Kruger is fourth at 5-over 77. Her temmate Kaylee Neff is next a 6-over 78.
The second and final round is Tuesday.
