ODESSA, Texas (AP) – Authorities in West Texas have shot and killed a man who they say pointed a handgun at them after being found in a residential alley.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Elizabeth Carter told the Odessa American that an Odessa police officer and an agent with the U.S. Marshal’s Service were involved in the shooting of 50-year-old Jason Wade Meador. She did not say which one fatally shot Meador.

Odessa officers at the scene Thursday said the suspect had poured flammable liquid on himself and appeared distraught.

Authorities had tried speaking with Meador before he pointed his weapon toward them and was shot.

Meador worked for Odessa police before serving as an Ector County sheriff’s deputy from 1989 to 1995.
