Before a ball was snapped this season, the state knew all about Gladewater defensive lineman Daylon Mack. The Tyler Morning Telegraph made Mack the cover boy for its football preview magazine.
But while Mack was a household name, others like Zach Hall, Trevor Keener and Pierre Leonard began 2014 not as well known.

Not anymore.
Keener helped lead Mineola and coach Joe Drennon to the program’s first-ever state championship appearance, Hall rewrote the Robert E. Lee record book for a single season by a quarterback and defensive lineman Leonard was a key element to John Tyler’s run to the Class 5A semifinals.
Mack is the Player of the Year for the Tyler Morning Telegraph and ETFinalScore.com’s 2014 All-East Texas Football Team. He follows Patrick Mahomes of Whitehouse (now at Texas Tech) as the award’s recipient. Joining Mack are Offensive MVP Hall, Defensive MVP Keener, Newcomer of the Year Leonard and Coach of the Year Drennon.
Player of the Year
Daylon Mack is a 6-2, 320-pound senior defensive tackle who continuously gave opposing offensive coordinators sleepless nights due to his versatility and playmaking skills.
Trending
The District 6-4A Division II MVP, Mack finished with 87 tackles — 37 of those were for losses with five sacks, and all of them came against opposing offenses that game planned to solve Mack. Mack also caused four fumbles, had three fumble recoveries and blocked two kicks for the Bears.
He has already been chosen for the AP all-state as a defender and recently was named a Parade All-American.
“He deserves all of these honors and accolades that are coming his way right now,” Gladewater coach John Berry said of Mack, who is currently the sought-after prize in a recruiting battle between TCU, Texas and Texas A&M.
“Daylon is a great football player, but he’s even a better kid and person.”
Mack helped Gladewater to an 11-2 season and the District 6-4A Division II championship. The Bears’ lone losses were to St. Thomas More (Lafayette, Louisiana) and in the closing seconds to eventual state champion Gilmer in the Class 4A Division II regional round.
A couple weeks ago in St. Petersburg, Florida, Mack turned in an MVP performance at the Under Armour All-American Bowl. Against the best players in the country, Mack recorded seven tackles, three tackles for loss and had a fumble recovery.
“I just wanted to impose my will on the offense today and cause a lot of havoc,” Mack said in his postgame interview.
Berry said Mack uses his superior physical attributes and intellect to overwhelm the opposition, and added regardless of where he goes to school, he is only going to get better.
“God gifted him with superior physical strength and speed for a defensive tackle,” Berry said. “His ball get-off and movement skills are as good as you’ll see. He’s also a real smart kid and he picks up on little things that offensive lineman do to try and block the schemes. He’s just a phenomenal playmaker.
“He’s just now being able to get in touch with playing the game from a technical standpoint. There is a lot of improvement in front of him that he is going to make and a lot more football in front of him that is going to be even better.”
Newcomer of the Year
John Tyler junior Pierre Leonard wanted and could have played varsity for the Lions a year ago, but UIL transfer obligations after moving from Chicago, Illinois, prevented that.
To make up for the lost year, Leonard made double the impact for the Lions in 2014.
The 5-10, 245-pound junior defensive lineman finished with 91 tackles to go along with 12 sacks, six quarterback pressures and 12 tackles for loss. That would be enough in itself, but Leonard also was a force on special teams with five blocked kicks and he recovered a fumble.
The 2014 Newcomer of the Year follows teammate and fellow John Tyler standout Geovari McCollister, who was a recipient of this honor last year. McCollister is a first-team quarterback this year.
“After sitting out (the 2013 season) it helped me get in the weight room, get my speed up, get stronger and get better and focus on my fundamentals and that way I could focus on school too,” Leonard told the Tyler Paper.
Leonard was one half of a dominant defensive tackle pairing. Junior Braylon Jones, a first-team All-East Texas selection, finished with 88 tackles and seven sacks.
Both will be back next year.
“His aggressive style of play along with Braylon’s aggressive, massive style of play, it helps pose a dominating threat in the middle of the field,” JT coach Ricklan Holmes said.
Offensive Player of the Year
Zach Hall enjoyed a strong sophomore season but went into overdrive as a junior to finish as District 11-6A Offensive MVP and American State Bank Player of the Year. His efforts also garnered Hall All-East Texas Offensive Player of the Year honors. He follows Carthage’s Blake Bogenschutz (now at UT San Antonio) as recipient of the honor.
Hall, a 5-11, 181-pound junior quarterback, finished with 2,053 yards passing and 1,502 yards rushing, accounting for 39 touchdowns. In one game alone against Garland Sachse, Hall rushed for six touchdowns to set a new school record, broke the mark for individual game yardage (523) and rushing yards in a game (272).
That was just the start.
By the time the final seconds ticked down in Lee’s bi-district loss to Waco Midway, Hall owned the school’s second-longest touchdown run (83 yards against Waco Midway), longest touchdown pass (92 yards to Jordan Devers) and was tied for most touchdowns thrown in a season with 1991 quarterback Andy Newberry.
There were other records, but it would take too long to list them.
Hall led REL to a 5-5 regular season and its first playoff appearance since 2010.
The Red Raiders were stopped at the first hurdle by Waco Midway to finish 5-6 overall.
“We want to advance more in the playoffs,” Hall said. “That little taste made us hungry so we are grinding hard for next year so we can go farther. It was a good year. The offense put up a lot of numbers and I put up a lot of numbers. I am a little surprised; I wasn’t expecting all of this stuff.
“But I’m also thankful to be on the team with guys like Daylon Mack. Those guys are All-Americans, so that means we are doing something good at Lee.”
Defensive Player of the Year/Coach of the Year
Prior to the 2014 season, the furthest Mineola High School football had ever advanced in the playoffs was the quarterfinals.
That occurred in 1962.
From the outside looking in, the Yellowjackets looked like a long shot to have any kind of postseason run thanks to a 0-3 start.
Mineola did not lose another game until three-time state champion Cameron Yoe stopped the Yellowjackets at AT&T Stadium.
Mineola coach Joe Drennon is the All-East Texas Coach of the Year. He follows Kilgore’s Mike Wood as last year’s award recipient.
The Yellowjackets were led on defense by a load of hard-hitting playmakers. None were bigger than senior Trevor Keener, who finished with 196 tackles, 25 of for loss. Keener is this year’s All-East Texas Defensive Player of the Year. He follows Longview’s Zaycoven Henderson as award’s recipient.
Keener was part of a punishing defensive unit that surrendered more than 28 points just twice this season. Keener also had five sacks, two caused fumbles, one fumble recovery and 14 quarterback pressures.
“This year was just unbelievable; every bit of it,” Keener said. “Our town was behind us 100 percent, even our rivals were rooting for us. I was happy and excited (to receive this honor) knowing that all my hard work paid off.”
Arguably Keener’s most impressive stop occurred in the regional semifinals against Pottsboro.
The Yellowjackets defense was bending and not breaking with Pottsboro forced into fourth-and-short from inside the 20. Instead of going for the field goal, Pottsboro opted to run the ball with its big fullback, who had already scored a touchdown earlier in the game.
When he received the handoff, it looked like a formality for the first down until Keener stepped in out nowhere and planted the fullback for no gain. That was one of several fourth-down stops Mineola’s defense had in the playoffs as part of its state final run.
Along with Keener, Mineola’s defense sported fellow All-East Texas selections Casey Gilbreath (114 tackles, 25 pressures and five recovered fumbles) at defensive end, Juan Vargas (214 tackles, 4 interceptions) at linebacker and Noah Sneed (8 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns) at defensive back.
Drennon knew at the start of the year that he had a playoff team, but wasn’t going to make any predictions after that.
Led by sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Crawford (1,226 yards passing, 10 TDs; 1,892 yards rushing, 26 TDs) and sophomore running back Chantz Perkins (258-2,216, 24 TDs) the Yellowjackets navigated past team after team all the way to Arlington.
It helped that they ran behind All-East Texas offensive tackles Riley Anderson and Austin Anderson.
Cameron Yoe proved too much to overcome in the final, but Drennon said that loss does not take anything away from a dream season.
“I told the guys afterward to please don’t let that one game ruin all of what you accomplished this year and what you brought to our community,” Drennon said. “They did a lot of great things.”
Drennon just completed his seventh season at the helm of the Yellowjackets and has led Mineola into the postseason in four of his seven years. This was the first time he’d taken a team to the state championship and although he is honored to be coach of the year, is quick to give credit to others for the Yellowjackets success.
“Anytime you get recognition you’re happy,” Drennon said. “But I am not just happy for myself, but also four our staff and our kids.
“It’s kind of a neat deal any time you can bring recognition to your school district; it’s a real good feeling. I am honored for it. We didn’t win the state championship, but we got to play in it and I am really proud of everyone (involved).”
