Henderson softball advances to state tournament

GRAND SALINE — Henderson junior pitcher Tiarra Davis had every excuse to come out rattled one day removed from a rough outing in Game 2 of the Class 3A Region II softball championship series against the North Lamar Pantherettes.



Instead, Davis bounced back to shut out North Lamar for six innings and punch the Lady Lions’ tickets to the state softball tournament with a 4-2 win on Saturday.

Henderson plated one run in the fourth and fifth innings before breaking the game open with a three-hit, two-run sixth to take a 4-0 lead into the final inning of play.

North Lamar threatened a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring two off a pair of errors with the bases loaded and one out, but Davis struck out one and forced a groundout to first to end the game.

The Lady Lions will play in the Class 3A semifinals at 9 a.m. or noon Thursday in Austin. The games are scheduled for Red & Charline McCombs Field on the campus of the University of Texas.
