It’s time to get back to work

No more sleeping until noon. No more afternoons at the pool. No more countless hours blasting through Black Ops II.

On Monday morning, scores of working parents will get the last laugh when alarms sound throughout the state. That’s because preseason football and volleyball workout begin bright and early, signaling the end of summer for teenage athletes.

Over the years, parental experts have developed ways to combat the “end of summer blues” and following the lists works for some, perhaps. But when it comes to football and volleyball players, the best advice could quite possibly be to score a touchdown, pick off a pass or spike a non-returnable kill.

When it comes to football, UIL that teams that didn’t participate in spring practice can begin workouts Monday without contact or contact equipment. Pads will be issued Friday and, thus, contact can begin.

Inter-school scrimmages can begin the weekends of Aug. 15, Aug. 21 and also Monday, Aug. 26. Schools that opted for the third scrimmage can’t open their regular season in Zero Week, which is set to begin Thursday, Aug. 29.

Meanwhile, volleyball teams from Class 5A to 1A will be issued equipment Monday and will be able to begin their scrimmages Friday. The regular season is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 12.

Two years ago, the UIL made drastic rule changes to football’s traditional two-a-day practice in order to protect players. But that having been an important move against the Texas Summer, practicing conditions remain brutal in this August heat.

In their latest forecast for the upcoming week, the CBS19 weather team predicts daytime highs to register in the high 90s and reach triple digits Wednesday and Thursday. Nighttime lows are expected to be in the mid 70s.
